Most men don't expect to go through menopause. But when Chip Conley’s prostate cancer treatment included hormone depletion therapy, his testosterone dropped to near zero, and he found himself experiencing hot flashes, brain fog, night sweats, mood swings, and weight gain. “I had all the symptoms,” he told Tamsen on The Tamsen Show, “except for the ones involving menstruation.”
This wasn’t just a medical event, it was a transformation. Conley, a renowned hotelier and author, used the experience to write publicly about his symptoms, building empathy and sparking unexpected conversations with both men and women.
What happened to Conley isn’t entirely unique. Hormone deprivation therapy (ADT), often used in advanced prostate cancer, leads to testosterone suppression that mimics menopause-like symptoms in men. According to the Mayo Clinic, side effects include hot flashes, emotional changes, and weight gain, just like in midlife women on the other side of estrogen loss.
His takeaway? “Now I understand what women go through. I’ve lived it.” He believes more men should know about andropause, a less severe but real age-related testosterone decline many men face. It’s often overlooked but can affect energy, mood, and muscle mass starting in the late 30s.
